Urko has a BSc in Mathematics and MSc in Computer Science, University of the Basque Country. He started his career as biostatistician in 2004 in the Research Unit of the Hospital Galdakao-Usansolo (Biscay, Spain). Since then, he has been involved (as collaborator and/or principal investigator) in many public competitive national and international research projects focused in the Health Services Research. His main research field is the development, validation and application of statistical methods, mainly in Health Related Quality of Life data, in longitudinal epidemiological studies. He is an expert in predictive modelling of longitudinal data, especially on the statistical strategies for handling missing data, and on the application of data mining techniques in medical sciences. He is an active member of the Health Services Research on Chronic Patients Network (REDISSEC) since its foundation and member of the Sociedad Española de Biometría (SEB) and of the BIOSTATNET (National Biostatistics Group).
