Odense University Hospital

Odense University Hospital (OUH) operates four academic and community hospitals located in the eastern part of the Region of Southern Denmark, including Svendborg Sygehus which has the largest medical department in Denmark.

A 1,000+ bed medical centre, OUH annually has more than 100,000 inpatient admissions and handles in excess of 1.1 million outpatient visits in 50 different clinical departments. The hospital has a budget of €870 million and employs more than 8,700 people. In Denmark, 16 specialised care pathways are offered only at OUH, and the hospital serves patients from across Denmark, as well as from abroad. The hospital has an organisation-wide, distinct patient-centred culture where the patients’ and their relatives’ benefit and experience are of the highest importance. At all times, this core value is reflected in every aspect of the work done at OUH by every member of staff.

Centre for Innovative Medical Technology

Centre for Innovative Medical Technology (CIMT) is a joint research and innovation unit at Odense University Hospital (OUH) and the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). In close collaboration with the hospital’s clinicians, CIMT facilitates the development, implementation and evaluation of new medical technologies.

CIMT supports the project activities linked to WP7, pilot site and technical input from OUH.

Role in project:

OUH will lead WP7, which deals with the empowerment of patients, caregivers and communities through the identification and analysis of empowerment opportunities and the needs towards these. Expected tasks for the project includes designing strategies for patients’ and families’ self-perception of their situation and the physical and mental implications thereof; the co-designing of integrative care pathways that take into account the measures surrounding the treatment and perspectives of everyone involved; the definition of interventions for improved empowerment and proactive attitudes among patients and caregivers; and the preparation of the implementation of the intervention, particularly in regard to barriers and entries.

OUH will also be in charge of:

  • Empowerment of patients, caregivers and communities (WP7);

  • Pilot Danish trial where OUH-Svendborg Hospital and 10 local municipalities will participate in the project, including the formal/informal carers and the social services;

  • To design strategies to provide support of patients and families for their empowerment;

  • Co-Design integrated care pathways including the patient and its stakeholders;

  • Prepare the implementation of the intervention with special emphasis on potential barriers/facilitators.
