Celebrating World Creativity and Innovation Day: A throwback to ADLIFE’s Hackathon

World Creativity and Innovation Day (21st April) serves as a reminder to try to solve old problems in new ways–with the potential of finding better and more effective methods to accomplish our goals!

A few months ago, we brought together the new generation of innovators at the OptiMedis office in Hamburg to collaborate on enhancing the ADLIFE platform. Over 48 intensive hours, 16 talented students and young professionals from diverse backgrounds came together to collaborate on enhancing the ADLIFE platform and exploring new business opportunities.

Purpose and process

During this #hackathon, participants worked in interdisciplinary teams, pooling their skills and expertise to address key challenges facing healthcare innovation. From refining our Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) to seamlessly integrating the ADLIFE toolbox with existing electronic health record (EHR) systems, the energy and creativity were palpable throughout that intensive weekend.

The young participants showcased creativity and innovative thinking designing features and functionalities to enhance healthcare delivery through the ADLIFE platform. Their proposed solutions are paving the way for improved patient care, streamlined workflows, and optimised healthcare processes.

The innovative contribution of the winning team

The winning team “MediCAT” (Medical Context Analysis Tool) developed a tool aiming to enhance clinical decision support system analysis. MediCAT addresses the challenge of transforming unstructured clinical guidelines, typically found in PDF format, into a more structured and accessible format. This transformation is achieved through a specialised pipeline in two consecutive steps: a Regular Expression based preprocessing of the PDF text and an LLM-based (Large Language Model) further semantical splitting of the extracted plain text into single paragraphs than can be used for further processing.

Looking ahead

As we reflect on the success of the hackathon, we're energised and inspired to continue our mission of innovation in healthcare. Stay tuned for updates on how the ideas and solutions generated during the hackathon will shape the future of the ADLIFE project.
